Spanish football giants Atlético Madrid have signed a three-year deal with Visit Rwanda, which will see the brand featured on the shirts of both the men’s and women’s teams starting next season.

However, Rwanda’s sponsorships with top clubs like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are facing growing scrutiny amid rising violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to DRC authorities, more than 7,000 people have been killed since January in ongoing conflict.

In response, a group of Arsenal supporters, calling themselves Gunners for Peace, is urging the club not to renew its sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda, arguing that it goes against Arsenal’s “values and standards.”

The current deal, reportedly worth over £10 million ($13.3 million) per year, is expected to expire at the end of the season.

As part of their campaign, the group has distributed armbands designed to cover the Visit Rwanda logo on match kits. They also staged a protest outside the Emirates Stadium before Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

A few PSG fans joined the demonstration, wearing the armbands and standing behind a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda.”
