The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), alongside various social stakeholders, has condemned remarks made by Blessed Godsbrain Smart of Onua TV/Onua FM regarding voters for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections.
During a press conference in Accra on Tuesday (16 July), GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour addressed these comments, stating, “Given the severity of his utterances and the ethical breach, we call on the board and management of Media General, to take immediate action to mete out appropriate sanctions to Mr. Smart. This will not only serve as a deterrent to others but will enhance public confidence in the media organisation, as an organisation that detest unprofessional conduct.”
Dwumfour emphasized the seriousness of Smart's remarks and the ethical breach involved. He called on the board and management of Media General to take swift and appropriate action against Mr. Smart to serve as a deterrent and to maintain public trust in the media organization by demonstrating a stance against unprofessional conduct.
He highlighted the distinction between holding leaders accountable and engaging in hate speech and insults. Dwumfour also urged journalists to adhere to professional standards to prevent unnecessary chaos in the country.
The GJA president advised all journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations to be mindful of their words and reporting, to help prevent the country from descending into violence and its related consequences.
