1 min readSenior High School (SHS) students in Ghana will soon be required to study a foreign language starting from Form Two, under a new policy unveiled by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Announcing the initiative during the launch of the free sanitary pad programme in Accra on Thursday, April 24, Mr Iddrisu explained that the decision forms a central part of President John Dramani Mahama’s educational vision aimed at equipping students with global skills and linguistic versatility.

"It is also the vision of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that from Senior High School 2, every Ghanaian student will have an option to choose between one major foreign language," the Minister stated.

The foreign languages set to be introduced include French, Spanish, German, and Chinese, with one becoming a compulsory subject alongside each student’s core academic focus.

Mr Iddrisu noted that the measure would be incorporated into Ghana’s education system during the next stage of curriculum reforms.

"French, Spanish, German, Chinese or any other – one compulsory language to accompany your area of study. That will also be introduced as part of our review of curricula," he said.

Some Ghanaians are concerned about the number of skilled teachers to tutor students.
