Head coach of Italy's national team, Luciano Spalletti on Sunday, June 8, announced his dismissal.

He made this revelation during a press conference at Coverciano, Italy’s national football training centre.

“Last night we were very together with President [Gabriele] Gravina. He told me that I will be relieved of my position as coach of the national team,” said Spalletti.

The termination of his contract comes in the wake of the team's 3–0 defeat to Norway in Oslo, in their opening qualifier for the 2026 tournament—a result that has put his position under scrutiny.

Luciano Spalletti said he would lead the team in their clash with Moldova, noting that it will be his last with the national team.

He continued that, despite the poor run, he intended to stay with the club and give his best for a massive comeback however, he has been told to leave after the Moldova clash.

“I had no intention of giving up. I would have preferred to stay in my place and continue doing my job. I’ll be there tomorrow evening against Moldova, then we’ll resolve the contract.”

Spalletti had a promising start leading the team at Euro 2024, where Switzerland knocked Italy out in the last 16.

Since his stint with Italy, the 66-year-old has overseen 23 matches, won 11 and lost 6. He has also secured 6 draws leading the team to the quarter final where they were eliminated in their clash against Germany.

Spalletti, who has managed Napoli, Inter Milan and Roma in Serie A, has taken charge of 23 matches as Azzurri head coach and won just 11.
