Ghana is set to host the 2028 Olympic Boxing African Qualification Tournament, slated for August 2027. This comes after it beat its contender, Nigeria, after a successful bid application by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).
The hosting rights were announced to the Ghana Boxing Federation on Tuesday, October 21, by the World Boxing Director of Events, Paulo Ferreira.
Subsequent to this, a ‘‘Host City Agreement’’ will be formalised between the International Olympic Committee and Ghana.
The Host City Agreement is a binding legal contract between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a selected city that hosts its tournament. Where the contract spells out all local operating expenses, including public security, police escorts, medical services, and specialised infrastructure upgrades.
What does Ghana stand to gain?
Over the years, the IOC (and in the case of football, FIFA) has retained all major commercial revenues, including broadcast rights, ticket sales, and official sponsorships, while host cities receive no direct share of those earnings.
The government and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly will cover the cost of hosting the tournament, including transportation, accommodation and the provision of the required boxing facilities.
The Ghana Boxing Federation, meanwhile, will provide the technical expertise and operational support needed to organise the competition.
The tournament is tentatively scheduled to take place from August 13 to 22, 2027.
