The seven missing Ghanaian fishermen have arrived safely at the Tema Fishing Harbour after a coordinated rescue mission involving multiple countries in the Gulf of Guinea.
They arrived in Ghana on Thursday, October 22, after being located in Beninese waters. Their canoe which departed from the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on Friday, October 9, for a fishing expedition offshore Axim was reported missing on Sunday, October 18.
Reacting to the incident, the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission, relevant coastal police stations and fishing communities began a search for the seven crew members who had gone fishing aboard their canoe, Second Chance.
This information came to light after the canoe’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the incident to the police at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi.
However, while addressing the media on Wednesday, October 21, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson disclosed that efforts were underway to secure the safe return of seven crew members.
He added, “This afternoon, I had a briefing that some contact has been established with the crew and that their location is within Togolese waters. And so the Togo Navy has also been informed. Efforts are still underway to see how they can get them safely home”.
