Abdul Hayye Yartey, Christian Atsu's former local manager, has stated that the late footballer gave his first FC Porto salary of 800 euros to a church in Ghana.
After being discovered playing for Yartey's Cheetah FC, Atsu joined the FC Porto youth club in 2009.
According to Yartey, Atsu, who passed away at the age of 31, was devoted to his religion and often sought to get his friends to attend church with him.
“When Christian went to Porto and succeeded in the trials, Porto went on to pay him 800 euros a month,” Yartey explained in an interview with TV3.
“So I received 800 euros through Western Union from Christian and I was so happy thinking he had sent me money, but his call followed up.
“He said the 800 euros he had sent was equivalent to x amount of Ghana cedis, which he ordered me to give to the church.”
Twelve days after the horrific earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, on February 18, 2023, Atsu's death was confirmed, and since that time, condolences have been flooding in for his family from all walks of life.
The family has scheduled his one-week observation on March 4.
