It has been three years since active construction began on the Valco-Tema-Kpone stretch, a major road that serves critical industries and warehouses from which government earns about GH¢200–300 million in taxes and levies every week, according to the Chairman of the Ghana Tanker Drivers Association, George Nyawunu.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, August 31, Mr Nyawunu expressed frustration over what he described as government’s neglect of the road network, despite the significant revenue generated from businesses operating along the corridor.

He said the association had, in recent weeks, written two separate letters to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, over the deteriorating condition of the roads.

According to him, the first letter was to formally register the association’s concerns, while the second was sent as a reminder. However, he said the Minister’s office had failed to respond to either letter, an act he described as disrespectful to the association.

Mr Nyawunu said the association was subsequently compelled to petition the Office of the President about a month ago after receiving no response from the Roads Minister.

He said they were still awaiting a response from the Presidency.According to him, on August 11, the association also petitioned the Ministry of Energy because the affected roads connect several oil refineries, including the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), as well as other fuel depots.

The Association Chairman cautioned that if the government failed to provide a concrete response by the end of the week, the truck drivers would be forced to take action.

He also urged truck drivers across the country to be prepared to stop work once the association’s leadership gives the signal.“Wherever you may be and the whistle is blown, stop immediately,” he cautioned.
