Another accident has occurred on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, leaving six people, all males, injured, with no fatalities recorded, the Ghana National Fire Service has reported.
A Toyota Corolla carrying the passengers plunged into the Birim River at Biremso on Tuesday, August 18, near the Anyinasin Junction.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 19, the GNFS said its Bunso Fire Station received a distress call about the incident at 9:04 a.m. and dispatched a crew to the scene.
An eyewitness told fire officers that he heard a loud crash and rushed to the area, where he found the black Toyota Corolla, with registration number GR 1425-18, in the river.
Consequently, residents helped rescue the accident victims before the firefighters arrived and transported them to the nearest health facility, the Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital, for medical attention.
The cause of the accident is unknown; however, authorities are investigating.
The vehicle was completely damaged in the crash, while some personal belongings were recovered from the wreckage.
Between January and August this year, at least four major accidents have officially been recorded on the Accra–Kumasi Highway, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The deadliest was on July 16 near Konongo, where 12 people died, and 44 were injured.
On January 11, 2026, a passenger bus crashed at Suhum Mankrong on the Accra–Kumasi Highway. Investigations pointed to wrongful overtaking and speeding as the main causes. The accident claimed one life and left 37 passengers injured, including 21 males and 17 females.
On February 14, 2026, a fuel tanker collided with vehicles at Ntoaso, leading to a massive explosion. The fire destroyed five cars and five motorbikes, leaving at least three people dead, burnt beyond recognition. Emergency responders reported multiple casualties, though the exact number of injured persons was not immediately determined.
In May 2026, several crashes were reported along different sections of the Accra–Kumasi Highway. These incidents were attributed to wrongful overtaking, driver fatigue, and brake failure. Reports confirmed multiple fatalities and several injuries, though the exact figures were not consolidated at the time.
The deadliest accident occurred on July 16, 2026, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region. A three‑vehicle collision involving a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck, and an empty fuel tanker was caused by wrongful overtaking. The crash resulted in 12 deaths, nine males and three females, and 44 injuries, with 30 victims in critical condition. Survivors were evacuated to the Asante Akyem Government Hospital and Steward Hospital for treatment.
