The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities is set to picket at the Jubilee House today, August 19, over what it describes as the government’s failure to fulfil its legal obligation to recruit persons with disabilities into public institutions.
The Coalition says persons with disabilities have been largely excluded from recent public-sector recruitment exercises despite efforts to submit the names of qualified graduates to the relevant authorities for consideration.
According to the group, it submitted a verified list of 200 qualified graduates with disabilities to the Ghana Education Service (GES) during its recent recruitment exercise, which saw about 7,000 people recruited.
However, the Coalition says none of the 200 graduates on its list was recruited, raising concerns about the implementation of legal provisions aimed at promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities in employment.
The group is therefore demanding urgent action from the government to create employment opportunities for qualified graduates with disabilities within the public sector.
Speaking to Citi News, Convenor of the Coalition, Gilbert Boateng Agyare, said the group is particularly calling on the Ministry of Finance to issue financial clearance to facilitate the recruitment and deployment of its members to various government institutions.
“We want the Finance Ministry to issue 400 to 500 financial clearances to help deploy our people to the various government institutions. Recently, GES did a recruitment of about 7,000 people, and we submitted about 200 names to GES, and nothing happened, and so we think that is repugnant.
“So why can’t we go to the Jubilee House to let the President know the realities faced by persons with disabilities? We think that if these financial clearances are given, definitely our people are going to be catered for,” he said.
