President Mahama has proposed a national referendum on the constitutional amendments recommended by the Constitution Review Committee.
He announced the Resetting Ghana Tour Citizens’ Engagement in Bolgatanga on August 15, 2026, as part of his two-day tour of the Upper East Region.
The referendum, he said, would be held alongside the 2027 District Assembly Elections.
“We therefore want to add the referendum to the District Assembly elections next year. Next year, apart from voting for your Assembly Members, you will also be required to vote on the constitutional amendments,” President Mahama said.
He assured that once citizens have decided on the proposed amendments, they would be submitted for approval, and once approval is secured, all the approved amendments would be codified and implemented.
“If the referendum is successful, we will implement the amendments to the entrenched clauses. That is what we are doing with regard to governance,” the President added.
President Mahama also disclosed that he would soon inaugurate the Constitutional Review Implementation Committee, which would be tasked with reviewing and consolidating the government’s position paper and the Constitutional Review Commission’s report.
According to him, the committee would categorise the proposed amendments as either entrenched or non-entrenched provisions. One of the proposals concerning an entrenched provision is the extension of the presidential term from four to five years.
“For non-entrenched clauses, we only need Parliamentary approval. We will put them before Parliament, and Members will vote and pass them,” he said.
“Entrenched clauses require that we conduct a referendum. At least 40 percent of registered voters must vote, and 75 per cent of those who vote must say yes.”
The President reiterated that the referendum would be conducted alongside the 2027 District Assembly Elections.
Road and school projects
President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take steps towards the construction of a road in the Kologo Traditional Area.
The directive followed an appeal by the Paramount Chief of the area, Naba Clifford Abagna Tandegrewongrekugre Asobayire V, for improved road connectivity in the traditional area.
In a related development, the President has also instructed the Minister of Education to take steps towards establishing a Senior High School to serve residents of Kologo.
The two directives followed separate requests from the Paramount Chief for improved road infrastructure and increased access to secondary education in the area.
