The Minority caucus in Parliament staged a walkout on Tuesday, November 3, during a parliamentary sitting to protest against Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to remove the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, from the chamber.
The Damongo MP was ordered by the Speaker to leave the House over his failure to provide evidence to support his claim that the incumbent government was selling diplomatic passports for amounts ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.
Mr Bagbin, however, directed the Marshal of Parliament to remove Mr Jinapor from the chamber, despite his eventual withdrawal of the allegation, citing his delay in complying with the Speaker’s directive. In a show of solidarity with the Damongo MP, the Minority MPs walked out of the chamber.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a demonstration to demand a detailed account of the funds allocated for the government’s recent evacuation exercise in South Africa.
Calls for accountability featured prominently at the protest, as demonstrators dressed mainly in black and red displayed placards demanding answers over the management of public funds. Some of the inscriptions read, “Chobo hene Ablakwa, give us our money” and “We need accountability”.
The protestors began their march from the Accra Mall and headed towards the Foreign Affairs Ministry and then to the Jubilee House, where they intend to press home their demands.
