The Director of NADMO for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Hendrick Noble Kinnah, has urged the Ministry of the Interior and national security authorities to declare an emergency holiday in Accra as heavy rains continue to cause widespread flooding and disrupt commuting across the capital.
His remarks follows a gridlocks, heavy overflowing of river banks and blocked roads and drenched commercial vehicles in homes, communities and major roads linked to the heavy downpour which started in the early hours of Monday June 29 which has paralysed economic activity in parts of the city.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily On Monday June 29, Mr. Kinnkah warned that conditions on the ground were deteriorating rapidly, stressing that emergency intervention was needed to prevent further risk to human life.
He cautioned that movement within Accra had become increasingly dangerous, adding that even familiar routes around the city centre were heavily flooded and impassable.
The Assembly Member further appealed for urgent coordination from national security authorities, suggesting that a temporary suspension of work activities would help reduce congestion and allow emergency services to respond effectively.
“I will just advise that if national security can order an emergency holiday in Accra so that everybody will stay at home. Because if you try coming to Accra it will be bad for you. If you don’t know the situation around Circle and flooded areas, don’t come because you may lose your life,” he warned.
To prevent worsening future occurrences Mr Kinnah called on stakeholders to adopt longterm solutions citing live threatening conditions.
He believes the current situation reflects deeper challenges in urban planning and drainage management.
