Even before the Black Stars kicked off their final group-stage match, FIFA had confirmed their place in the Round of 32.
FIFA announced Ghana’s qualification for the Round of 32 on Friday, June 27, 2026, through its official tournament communications after results elsewhere mathematically guaranteed the Black Stars' progression.
Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay secured the qualification threshold, ensuring Ghana’s four points from their first two matches were enough to advance, regardless of the outcome of their final group game against Croatia.
With FIFA’s expanded 48-team World Cup format, Ghana became one of five countries, alongside Egypt, England, Portugal and Paraguay, to secure a place in the Round of 32 before completing all three group matches. The Black Stars achieved the feat after collecting four points from their opening two games, courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Panama and a goalless draw with England.
The new format has created several scenarios in which teams can secure qualification before playing their final group-stage fixture.
Despite already booking their place in the knockout stage, Ghana’s clash with Croatia remains crucial, as it will determine the Black Stars’ final position in Group L and, consequently, the calibre of opponent they will face in the Round of 32.
A victory over the 2018 World Cup finalists could hand Ghana top spot in the group and potentially a more favourable knockout tie. A draw or defeat, however, could see the Black Stars finish second or qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, depending on results elsewhere.
The Black Stars have impressed with their resilience throughout the group stage. A dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama gave Ghana the perfect start before a disciplined performance against England strengthened the belief that the four-time African champions are capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
Elsewhere, Paraguay has also secured its place in the Round of 32 and will face Germany in the knockout stage. The identities of Ghana’s opponents, as well as those of Egypt, England and Portugal, will only be confirmed after the conclusion of the final round of group-stage matches.
