A fire incident which occurred on Saturday, October 10, has wiped out part of the Kumasi Crnyral Market near Aboabo Station in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to the media, the Ashanti Regional Commander ACFO I Peter Tetteh blamed highly flammable materials kept in the stalls such as plastics for triggering the fire.
The victims say they have lost years of savings as such, they are calling on the government the to come to their aid.
The incident adds to a number of fire outbreaks recorded in Ghana in recent times. Several individuals allegedly lost their lives following a fire outbreak in parts of the Industrial Area at Avenor, Accra in the early hours of Thursday, October 1.
While some residents managed to escape the devastating fire, others were reportedly trapped inside the affected buildings.
Speaking to the media, an eyewitness recounted how a mother has been left distressed as she waits to know the fate of her young child, whom she had left inside before the fire broke out.
The eyewitness said the affected area, known as Kofikrom, is occupied by several people, some of whom were on night duty when the fire started.
"The place is called Kofikrom and people live there. Some are on night duty. Some had to climb the wall, some couldn't come out. They were screaming, but it was too late
According to the eyewitness, the mother was outside when the fire started and was unable to return inside to rescue her child.
"There are about 7 people in there. A lady there told us. She was screaming, and we asked her the problem, and she said her little child is inside and we couldn't enter. She was outside when the fire started, so she couldn't go inside to take her child," the eyewitness said.
Residents and bystanders remained concerned as the Ghana National Fire Service worked to contain the fire. The situation has raised fears that more people could be trapped inside the affected area as the fire continues to spread. Dark smoke can be seen billowing from the area in videos and images circulating on social media, while people have reportedly sustained burns in the incident.
