1 min readPresident John Dramani Mahama has formally inducted the newly appointed heads of Ghana’s military branches into the Armed Forces Council during a brief swearing-in ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence.

The induction precedes a key Council meeting expected to address critical issues such as officer promotions and strengthening the military’s operational tools.

Those sworn in include Major General William Agyapong as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong as Chief of Air Staff.

In his address, President Mahama emphasized the need for strong ethical leadership within the Armed Forces.

“Professionalism, discipline, and integrity must guide your actions,” he said, stressing the military’s vital responsibility in maintaining national peace and stability.

Among those present were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Other attendees included the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and other senior government officials.

The Armed Forces Council plays a pivotal role in advising the President on the management and structure of the military, including officer appointments and welfare matters.

Going forward, the Council is expected to meet frequently to deliberate on key strategies that will improve the readiness and capability of the Ghana Armed Forces.
