The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has ordered a major overhaul of the technical team and management committee following the resignation of Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach.
The directives were agreed at a high-level meeting between the ministry and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Friday, October 2, where they adopted seven major measures to steer the affairs of the team.
The Portuguese tactician parted ways with Ghana after a poor run of form in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars losing their opening two Group C matches and left without a point.
Ghana began with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast before surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Seven measures
Under the new seven measures, all existing national team committees, as well as the whole of the Black Stars’ technical team, are to be dissolved and a new committee established.
The new National Technical Management Committee is to comprise two government-appointed experts and two nominees from the GFA.
The GFA has also been directed not to appoint the next Black Stars coach without consulting the new committee.
The existing national team management structure is also to be replaced by two committees, one responsible for men’s football and another for women’s football.
The ministry has further called for state-provided accommodation for the Black Stars head coach to be restored. For the past few years, coaches who lead the Black Stars have mostly lodged in hotels, incurring huge costs that put a strain on finances.
Another directive seeks to consolidate Ghana’s national youth team structure, with the government expected to participate in the selection of development coaches for the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 teams.
The seventh measure calls for the ministry and GFA to conclude and sign a FIFA-standard cooperation agreement aimed at establishing joint decision-making between the two institutions.
The changes come as Ghana faces the possibility of missing a second successive Africa Cup of Nations tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 finals in Morocco.
The GFA is now expected to work within the proposed structure as Ghana seeks to revive its qualifying campaign and appoint a successor to Queiroz.
The Black Stars are expected to return to action next month in a double-header in the AFCON qualifiers, with both matches scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana are seeking to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 edition.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
