Ghana’s Group L 2026 World Cup clash against England remains a talk of the town even after days. England had a hard time breaking Ghana’s "compact” defensive wall, obviously frustrating them and finally ending the game in a stalemate.
Among the many who predicted a win for England while explicitly stating that it would be a shock to him when Ghana wins against the Three Lions was former Ghana international Odeartey Lamptey.
However, following the game, he has applauded the Black Stars for their performance.
Ghana’s backline, set up under head coach Carlos Queiroz, has emerged as one of the standout defensive units at the tournament, yet to concede a goal after two matches.
Despite facing 30 shots across their opening fixtures, the Black Stars remain among only four teams still unbeaten defensively, underlining their resilience at the back.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Lamptey highlighted the growing understanding between centre-backs Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku, noting the rapid progress of the pairing on the global stage.
“I was surprised when the two centre-backs were paired. This is their first tournament. They fumbled in their first game, but yesterday they were superb. Gideon has the experience. The back four was solid,” he said.
He also showered praise on Ghana’s current ‘star’ keeper, Benjamin Asare. England fired 19 shots; however, none found the back of the net due to his stunning keeping skills. With six saves so far, he has earned an accolade as the only goalkeeper without conceding at the 2026 World Cup so far.
According to him, the Hearts of Oak keeper’s display isn’t coming as a surprise to him, because he has worked hard for it.
“I’m not surprised Benjamin Asare is doing well in the national team; he has worked hard for this,” he added.
The draw against England leaves Ghana in a strong position in Group L and on the brink of qualification for the Round of 32 ahead of their final group fixture.
The Black Stars will face Croatia on Saturday, June 27, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 GMT.
Lamptey’s comments before the Ghana-England match
Without mincing words, former Ghana international, Nii Odartey Lamptey, says it will be a shock to him if the Black Stars secure a win over England in their crucial Group L clash at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup at Gillette Stadium in Boston.
Both the Black Stars and Three Lions secured a win in their first games with hopes of progressing to the next stage.
Speaking ahead of the match, Mr Lamptey believes that while Ghana has shown resilience, the Three Lions have more depth and experience at the highest level.
“I will be surprised should Black Stars win against England. They are better than us in terms of everything,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
He, however, said he would gladly celebrate if Ghana pulled off a surprise victory.
“I’m a Ghanaian, and if we win, I will celebrate, but on the face of it, I’ll not be surprised if we lose to England,” he added.
