2 mins readCommunications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars was not an easy one.Despite facing intense criticism for the team’s underwhelming performances, particularly the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Addo’s position was debated among the GFA Executive Council members.

However, after careful consideration, the council ultimately opted to keep the 49-year-old in charge. Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum admitted that the decision was a tough one, with many members uncertain about Addo’s future.“It was a very tensed atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team. Not all of them said yes. It was very very difficult,” he said.

“I sat there for hours and still, it got to the point where there was a stalemate so the meeting had to be adjourned and for them to reconvene again so it was tough.“It was not just a straightforward decision that after hearing from him or listening to him, we want to say yes or we are all saying yes to his continuous stay in office or otherwise. It was very tough. The end product is that he will stay based on the council’s stay.

But the factors that led to the decision was very very tough.”When the team reconvenes in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Addo will be determined to silence his critics and demonstrate his capability.
