Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to sign a new contract to extend his term with the Black Stars, according to sources.
This comes after he received commendations and backing from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The said deal comes after the Portuguese tactician was assessed at the World Cup. Despite the Black Stars' elimination at the Round of 32, it is reported that authorities are satisfied with his ra is expected to sign a new two-year agreement in the coming days as Ghana seeks to maintain stability and continue its rebuilding project under his leadership.
Queiroz is expected to lead Ghana to qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars have been drawn in a qualifying group alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
The former Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar and South Africa head coach will also be tasked with helping Ghana end its long wait for continental glory, with the country’s last AFCON title coming in 1982.
When was Queiroz announced as coach?
The Portuguese coach took over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed after a poor run of form that led to defeats against Austria and Germany in international friendlies on March 27 and March 30, respectively.
Queiroz's contract was for a short period, from April to July (a four-month agreement), according to reports that emerged after his appointment, after which an extension would be subject to his performance at the global tournament.
He was officially unveiled on April 23 at the Alisa Hotel. His contract lasted just under four months (April–July 2026). He guided the team through the FIFA World Cup, recording one win, two draws and two losses across five matches.
Ati-Zigi on Carlos's stay
Following the Black Stars' elimination from the World Cup after their 0-1 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32 on Friday, July 3, at Kansas City Stadium in the USA, questions emerged about the future of head coach Carlos Queiroz.
The team's head coach shared a post on Facebook on Sunday, July 5, stating that, “I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved… Reaching a higher level should never be the destination; it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.”
Several media houses reported that the tenure of the Portuguese tactician had ended; however, a later response from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) denied receiving any official resignation from the coach, and Queiroz also denied the reports, indicating that he remains head coach.
Speaking on the uncertainty surrounding the coach's future with the national team, Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi backed retaining Carlos, praising his ability to ignite a level of positivity in the squad.
Ati Zigi, who featured in two matches under Queiroz during Ghana's World Cup campaign, said he was unaware of the details surrounding the coach's contract but believes keeping him as head coach would be a positive decision.
“I don't know about his contract situation, but I feel he is a great coach, and I love how he brought about the positivity in camp. But if the leadership wants him to stay, it will be a good decision,” he told Sporty FM.
