Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been spotted assaulting a police officer during the NPP led #SavetheJudiciary demonstration which was held in the early hours of Monday, May 5.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @Popony_J, a group of police officers had created a barricade at the entrance of Parliament House to prevent protesters from entering the forecourt.
Afenyo-Markin together with Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Richard Ahiagbah, were among the group of protesters being blocked by police.
The Minority leader appeared visibly upset and struck one of the officers on the head.
While the reason for his actions is yet to be officially explained, it is believed that the Effutu MP may have been frustrated for being denied entry as he was expected to deliver a petition to the Judiciary Service.

About the demoThe New Patriotic Party (NPP) led the #SavetheJudiciary demonstration today in response to President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The purpose of the protest is in defence of judicial independence and a push back against what they described as executive interference in the judiciary.
The NPP was joined by several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM.
The demonstration began at 5:00 a.m. today with protesters assembling at a park opposite the Supreme Court before marching through Accra, ending at Jubilee House, where they presented their petition.
Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, received their petition on behalf of the president and assured them of government's commitment to uphold democracy in the country.
