The Students' Representative Council (SRC) for the University of Ghana has condemned the state of chaos that erupted during the General Assembly Elections on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
A video that circulated on social media depicted some University of Ghana students involved in a brawl during the election.
The viral video depicted a tumultuous scene as certain students were observed attempting to seize the ballot box at Mensah Sarbah Hall, the location of the election.
The disruptive behavior of these students went beyond just attempting to take the ballot box. It also involved violent actions, including physical assaults on individuals and the destruction of tables and chairs used for the event.
These actions eventually led to the suspension of the election by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Reacting to the incident, the SRC noted that it is disheartened by the harm caused to individuals and property.
"The Executive Council of the UGSRC write this communiqué with deep regret and disappointment regarding the recent incident that took place during our scheduled election for the Speaker position," the statement said. "It is disheartening to acknowledge the chaos and acts of violence that transpired, resulting in harm to individuals and property damage, the SRC statement stated."
Meawhile, the SRC says it would not shield anyone found culpable.
