The Chairman of the 7-member ad-hoc committee responsible for investigating the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Samuel Atta Akyea, has announced that Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is scheduled to appear before the committee on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
Additionally, Mr. Atta Akyea revealed that the three senior Police officers - COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi - who have previously testified before the committee, will return alongside their legal representatives on the same date.
He emphasized "also, the most prominent person whose name has been bandied about, the IGP himself should also come with his lawyers.”
“Some serious allegations have been made in public, but the substance of the allegations has not been made in public. That is to say, the evidential support for those allegations is what we are going to unearth, so which piece of evidence that we’ll give to the public that will not hurt national security, we’ll exercise that discretion,” he told Joy News.
Mr. Atta Akyea further noted that although serious allegations have been made publicly, the specific evidence supporting these allegations has not been disclosed to the public. The committee aims to uncover this evidential support while carefully considering national security concerns.
Meanwhile, Franklin Cudjoe, the President of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, expressed his view that the committee's work should have concluded when the witnesses admitted to their voices being on the recorded tape. He questioned the committee's decision to continue entertaining additional testimonies, particularly from the police officers, which he believed was leading to a reconsideration of the Ghana Police Service's mandate.
Cudjoe commented, "I don't know why the committee chairman is allowing storytelling, and suddenly we find ourselves in a situation resembling a comedy of errors."
