More than 15,000 aspirants have been cleared to contest the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) upcoming constituency executive elections, while 25 aspirants were disqualified during the vetting process.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, September 30, the party’s Director of Elections and IT, Mahdi Gibril, said about 480 aspirants are the only candidates contesting their respective positions and will therefore go unopposed.

He noted that, “From what we receive as submitted, we’re talking about almost 15,000-plus that have been able to submit their forms for the elections. However, by the end of the vetting, just about only 25 people were disqualified. So we don’t have a huge number that have been disqualified across the country. So we are still within the 15,000 who are now our candidates for the election.”

The upcoming constituency executive elections is to determine who will manage and organise the party at the constituency level. Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to conduct its National Officers’ Elections on October 3.

The election is expected to determine who will occupy key leadership positions at the party’s national level and help direct its activities.

The 47 aspirants contesting the National Officers’ Elections are vying for nine categories of national officer positions: National Chairman, National Vice-Chairperson, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Nasara (Zongo) Organiser, and National Communications Director.

According to a statement signed by the Chairman of the National Officers’ Elections Committee, Frederick Opare-Ansah, all 47 aspirants who appeared before the committee satisfied the requirements to contest the elections.

The National Vice-Chairperson race had the most aspirants, with 13 candidates cleared. This was followed by the National Organiser position, which has eight candidates.

Six aspirants were cleared for the National Youth Organiser position, while five qualified to contest the National Nasara Organiser race.

Four aspirants were cleared to contest the National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Treasurer positions.

Two candidates were cleared for the National Women’s Organiser position, while only one aspirant was cleared for the National Communications Director position.
