In a bid to expand public understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and increase active participation, officials on Monday, April 28, conducted a sensitization outreach at market areas and lorry stations in Pokuase, located within the Amasaman Municipality.
The exercise, jointly executed by the Provider and Client Relations Unit of the Corporate Affairs Directorate and the Ga District Office, saw a team of eleven staff members engaging directly with the local community.
The group, led by Client Services Manager Madam Ruth Kukua Ntumy Coleman, took to the bustling public spaces to educate residents on the scheme’s diverse healthcare benefits.
Key messages during the campaign focused on the need for residents to enroll in the NHIS and renew their membership regularly to avoid interruptions in accessing medical services.
The team also shed light on special policies that allow pregnant women, elderly individuals aged 70 and above, and SSNIT contributors to register free of charge—an effort to safeguard the health needs of vulnerable groups.
The outreach received a positive response from community members, many of whom took advantage of the opportunity to renew their health insurance cards on-site.
Others expressed interest in encouraging their families and peers to sign up. Feedback from participants also included a call for the introduction of mobile registration units during future visits to make it easier for newcomers to join the Scheme.
This awareness drive is one of many initiatives by the NHIS aimed at bringing its services closer to the people and promoting health equity. The Scheme has reiterated its commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030, with community engagement being a central strategy in reaching that goal.
