Rumours began to swirl over the future of Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, with many speculating that, despite his contract running until 2027, he could part ways with the club as he nears a decade in charge.
Pep Guardiola officially took charge of Manchester City FC in July 2016, ahead of the 2016/17 season, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini, who had managed City for 3 years.
By July, he will have spent a decade in charge of Manchester City, sparking concerns about fatigue, given that Pep Guardiola has never stayed this long at a single club before, raising the possibility of his exit after this campaign.
However, Pep's recent remarks about his side coming back better next season have sparked a possible stay amid increasing speculation.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Guardiola struck a forward-looking tone, highlighting the team’s development and suggesting further progress lies ahead.
” The road that we have taken together this season, this year. And yeah, the job has been good. I’ve been, you know, new players.
And I see the team, how it grew up, you know, through the month. And we are better than we were two or three months ago. And next season, we’ll be better,” he indicated.
Guardiola also emphasised the importance of squad evolution, explaining how working with new players continues to motivate him despite the natural cycle of departures within the team, adding that the changes within the squad also help refresh the team.
“Working with new players is like being involved in the club, yeah, and I would love to have some players from many, many years, you know, that they had in the past.
"But the people get old and change. So, it’s normal", he added.
He also hinted that two more ‘old players’ will part ways with City at the end of this season.
“Speaking of players moving on, getting a little bit older, two more will be leaving at the end of this season”, he hinted.
Under his leadership this season, Manchester City have integrated several new players, with Guardiola noting a steady improvement in performances over recent months. He indicated that the team is now in a stronger position than earlier in the campaign.
While no official decision has been announced regarding his future, Guardiola’s comments indicate continuity at a time when uncertainty had begun to grow.
Pep's achievements so far
Pep Guardiola for nearly his 10 years stint with Man City has built one of the most successful eras in English football. So far, he has won six Premier League titles. He also guided them to two FA Cup triumphs, in 2019 and 2023, and five EFL/Carabao Cup victories, setting a record for the most wins by a manager in that competition.
Beyond domestic success, Guardiola delivered City’s long‑awaited breakthrough in Europe by winning the UEFA Champions League in 2023, completing a historic treble that season. He followed that up with victories in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup later in 2023. His consistency has also been reflected in three Community Shield wins.
Altogether, Guardiola has secured 18 major trophies with Manchester City between 2016 and 2026, contributing to his career tally of 40 trophies across Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City. His decade at the Etihad has not only transformed the club’s trophy cabinet but also reshaped their identity into one of Europe’s most dominant teams.
