When MzGee was just 18, she had just finished secondary school and was mourning her mother’s death. Life forced her to grow up fast. She suddenly had to take care of four younger family members with no one else to turn to.On her show, Gee O’Clock, the popular media personality talked about how tough things were when she started out and how those hard times pushed her to chase success with everything she had.
“I didn’t know jack,” she recalled, “but I knew I had to be my own rescue.”
Her father was living overseas, and no other relatives could help. So MzGee stepped up and became the main person looking after her younger siblings and cousin. It was a heavy load—both emotionally and financially—but it gave her the drive to keep pushing forward.
She stayed home to rewrite some of her exams, but in 2004, she made a bold choice. She left her siblings behind and went back to school, determined to chase her dreams and get her life back on track.
MzGee’s media career kicked off in 2007 when she auditioned for a reality show. She didn’t win, but the experience kept her going. From then until 2014, she worked at several places for free, just to gain experience.
“I worked at places I wasn’t paid,” she said. “Sometimes all I had was hope and a strong sense of purpose.”
In 2014, she was working as a front desk staff in a corporate office when something unexpected happened. She met sports journalist Nathaniel Attoh. He helped her connect with music executive Mark Okraku-Mantey, who was then the Programs Manager at Hitz FM in Accra. The only position available at the station? A production assistant job—with no pay.
“Did I have a choice? I needed to rescue myself,” she stated.
MzGee took the unpaid job and worked very long hours without a salary for more than a year and a half. She gave up a lot, but she was committed to her goal. She survived with help from kind friends, supportive family members, and occasional tips from her bosses.
Her rise in the media world didn’t come with ease or wealth. She built her career by working hard, staying strong, and believing that if no one else would save her, she had to do it herself.
Today, with over 10 years of experience and a strong reputation in Ghana’s media space, MzGee is proof that anyone can change their story if they’re willing to fight for it.
“You need to acknowledge that there is a challenge,” she urged the public. “And you need to be ready to rescue yourself.”
