The Manhyia South constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, (Chairman Tom Tom), has extended an apology to the Ashanti Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi).
This comes in light of comments made amid the recent verbal clashes between the camps of Chairman Wontumi and Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.
In an interview with Pure FM, Ofori Atta stressed the importance of both factions resolving their differences to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in winning the 2024 elections.
He believes that the appointment of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Dr. Bawumia should mark the end of internal divisions.
Ofori Atta expressed his readiness to collaborate with Chairman Wontumi and the regional campaign team to secure victory for the NPP in the upcoming elections. He publicly apologized, stating, “We have resolved every issue. I want to leverage your platform to send a message to our regional chairman, Wontumi, that if I said something wrong during the chaotic moments, I’m sorry, and he should forgive me. I have already met him and spoken to him, but I believe I have to make it public.
“If we don’t unite and support him to deliver in the Ashanti Region, then we have no business going into the elections. The one thing we need going into this election is unity, and I believe we should all work for it. As the constituency chairman, I have no option but to support the regional chairman. Let me repeat once again that if I said something to him and it didn’t sit well with him, I apologize. He should forgive me, and let’s all unite,” he said.
Mr Ofori Atta's comments follow the confirmation of Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as the running mate of the NPP candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections.
On Thursday, July 5, 2024, the National Council of the NPP endorsed Dr. Bawumia's recommendation to have NAPO as his running mate.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who described Dr. Opoku Prempeh as “charismatic” and “bold,” endorsed his position.
“I am happy to report that after the necessary consideration, the NC unanimously endorses Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia,” the General Secretary of the NPP is quoted as having said at a press conference on Thursday.
“He is a charismatic, bold leader who excelled at the Ministry of Education and at Energy,” he said.
