2 mins readMinister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has initiated discussions with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Ghana’s interest in hosting a new office for the West African Health Organisation (WAHO).

The engagement took place on Monday, April 14, during a courtesy call by a high-level ECOWAS delegation to the Ministry of Health in Accra.

The visit centred on strengthening regional health collaboration and assessed Ghana’s suitability as a potential host for WAHO’s next office.

Talks between the two parties explored how the presence of a WAHO office in Ghana could boost regional health coordination, enhance preparedness for public health emergencies, and increase technical cooperation across West Africa.

Welcoming the delegation, Minister Akandoh expressed Ghana’s strong commitment to WAHO’s mission and acknowledged the critical role the organisation plays in shaping healthcare systems in the region.

“Hosting a WAHO office would not only strengthen our partnership but also reinforce Ghana’s position as a hub for health innovation and coordination in West Africa,” the Minister stated.

He also highlighted Ghana’s solid public health credentials, medical research contributions, and well-established health infrastructure as indicators of its readiness to support WAHO’s broader agenda.

The ECOWAS team praised Ghana’s proactive role in health diplomacy and commended the Ministry for its willingness to deepen regional partnerships. The team also noted Ghana’s strategic location and ongoing leadership in health initiatives as strong advantages.

Minister Akandoh reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with both regional and global health bodies, reaffirming the government’s focus on improving outcomes and building resilient healthcare systems.

“We remain committed to working closely with regional and international partners to improve health outcomes and to build resilient, sustainable healthcare systems across the West African sub-region,” he added.
