The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the government’s plans to cover the full travel expenses of Doris Adu Gyamfi, the mother of murdered 15-year-old Ghanaian Javits Frimpong, so that she can attend her son’s funeral in the United States.
The announcement follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to grant the bereaved mother an immediate visa after an intervention by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
According to Ablakwa, he had spoken with Madam Adu Gyamfi and assigned officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist her with the visa application process.
He described her grief as unimaginable and said the government was committed to ensuring that she could travel to the United States to pay her last respects to her son.
“The Mahama administration will take care of the full cost of Madam Adu Gyamfi’s travels and also stands ready to contribute towards a dignified funeral,” he said in an X post on Saturday, October 31.
The minister welcomed President Trump’s intervention and commended Mayor Mamdani for his role in securing the visa arrangement.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with the relevant authorities to secure justice for Javits.
“We resolve to continue working together to secure justice for Javits,” Ablakwa added.
His comments came after the Mayor of New York announced that the Trump administration was ready to grant the deceased 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager’s mother a visa without delay, enabling her to join her family and pay their final respects to their child.
On his official X (formerly Twitter) page, he wrote:
“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away.
“Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump, and he has agreed to grant her a visa immediately.
“All of New York City is mourning this tragedy.”
Death of Javits
Javits Frimpong was confirmed dead after being shot in the abdomen on Thursday, October 29.
According to a police report, the deceased was allegedly shot by three teenage boys aged between 16 and 18 shortly before 9:30 a.m. near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the borough.
The suspects were reportedly dressed in all-black clothing and wore blue surgical masks during the attack.
The circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident are yet to be established. However, the police have launched a manhunt for the three teenage suspects.
Javits Frimpong had moved to the United States from Ghana about a year ago to join his father.
Javits’ father, during an engagement with the press, revealed that his son, whom he described as very quiet and reserved, had complained about being bullied at school a day or two before his death.
