The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has called off its strike after the government addressed 80% of the concerns raised by the union.
The decision was announced on Friday, October 16, following negotiations over disparities in market premiums and other allowances between teaching and non-teaching staff in Ghana’s public universities.
GAUA National President Kwaku Karikari Amoah said the government’s response gave the union reason to suspend the industrial action.
“On that basis, we agreed that we unanimously suspend this strike so that our members will go back to their offices on Monday to work,” he said.

The strike stemmed from disputes over remuneration and allowances, with the union demanding fairer service conditions for non-teaching staff.
The industrial action had raised concerns about the smooth running of public universities, as administrative staff are responsible for key functions, including student registration, admissions, academic records and other essential operations.
Despite the suspension, some of the union’s concerns remain unresolved, as the government has addressed about 80% of its demands.
GAUA is expected to continue engagements with the relevant authorities to resolve the outstanding issues.
