1 min readThe Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA) has revealed that illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey, is hindering its ability to baptize new converts.The Church highlighted that the pollution of Ghana's water bodies is adversely impacting its efforts to spread the gospel.

Pastor Edward Nyarkoh, the Executive Secretary of the Northern Ghana Union of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, mentioned that to continue its baptismal practices, the Church has established its own stream.“Galamsey has come to destroy all the water bodies. So it is also affecting our baptism. Previously we were baptising in rivers, but nowadays all the water bodies are contaminated.

“Therefore, that has resulted in this church to build this baptism, so that all those who have been baptised and all pastors who have been officiating will not be contaminated.”Galamsey has gained significant attention in recent months, prompting numerous organizations and individuals to advocate for a complete ban on all forms of mining.

In response, Organised Labour has intensified its efforts by scheduling a strike for Thursday, October 10, aiming to pressure the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action against the issue.
