Mykhailo Mudryk scored a stunning solo goal as Chelsea kept their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe via the Premier League alive with a 3-2 victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
With the score at 2-1 late in the second half, the result was still in the balance. However, a moment of brilliance from substitute Mudryk tilted the game decisively in Chelsea's favor.
He intercepted Conor Gallagher's pass at top speed, dribbled past defender Fabian Schar, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly finished to secure the win for Chelsea.
The victory marked a significant step forward for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who have struggled to close out balanced games in the past.
Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea with a clever backheeled goal, before Alexander Isak equalized for Newcastle at the end of the first half.
Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's lead with a brilliant strike from distance, before Mudryk's goal looked to have sealed the win. Jacob Murphy's superb 90th-minute goal made for a nervy ending, but Chelsea held on for a deserved victory.
Chelsea, currently in 11th place, are still in the running for European qualification through the league. Victory over Newcastle took them to within four points of seventh-place West Ham with a game in hand. However, consistency has been a challenge for Chelsea this season under Pochettino.
