A bail of GH¢50 million with three sureties has been granted to Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah after he voluntarily appeared before the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
On Thursday, October 1, the legislator reported to EOCO’s offices at about 10 a.m. for questioning. This development comes days after an official of EOCO attempted to take Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah into custody.
The incident occurred during proceedings on Ms Baffoe’s bail application, in which she faces an abetment-of-crime charge related to the alleged publication of false news on the TikTok account “Ghana Jollof.”
However, EOCO has clarified that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah refused to honour two invitations issued in February 2026 to assist with its investigations.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has been accused of criminal conspiracy, causing financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other suspected violations. But Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has denied all allegations levelled against him.
Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on EOCO to channel its energy to prosecuting individuals involved in to major narcotics-related investigations rather than opposition politicians.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP wrote, “A state that aggressively pursues a lawyer-legislator defending a victim of human rights abuse must, at the very least, show equal, if not greater, determination in fighting the drug barons using Ghana as a major global transhipment hub”.
The EOCO has similar mandates to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). EOCO is a specialized intelligence-led law enforcement agency in Ghana established to monitor, investigate, and prosecute economic and organized crimes.
Established by the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804), it replaced the former Serious Fraud Office (SFO) to provide a more robust framework for tackling complex financial crimes.
