A road accident involving a Toyota Hiace and a Peugeot saloon car on the Akuse–Akosombo Highway in the Eastern Region has claimed the life of one person, while 14 others have sustained serious injuries on Monday, October 26. The cause of the crash is yet to be made known by the public.
However, the body of the deceased was taken to St. Martin de Porres Hospital for preservation, while the injured victims were transported to the same hospital for medical attention.
Ghana continues to record road fatalities almost daily. Last week, a fatal accident at Aboabo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of four eight-year-old schoolchildren and left three others injured.
The four deceased have been identified as Juraid Mohammed, Anisah Ibrahim, Fati Muniru and Raiyan Faisal. They were pronounced dead on arrival at the Manhyia District Hospital.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday, October 20, when the seven pupils of the School of Islamic Studies at Akotosu were knocked down by a Hyundai van that had veered off the road as they attempted to cross after classes.
According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle was travelling from the Aboabo Post Office area towards the Airport Roundabout when the driver reportedly lost control while descending a slope, hitting the seven children who were on the pavement waiting to cross the road.
Meanwhile, two of the injured children, 12-year-old Laila Muniru and five-year-old Bushira Musapha, are in critical condition and are expected to be transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
The third injured pupil, six-year-old Saisa Bila, is stable and receiving treatment at the Manhyia District Hospital.
