Illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has taken a deadly turn in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.
Local reports confirm that four people have lost their lives in galamsey pits in April alone. The tragic incidents occurred in Ankra, Essase, and most recently at Sampa. According to eyewitness accounts, the victims accidentally slipped and fell into dams dug for illegal mining operations.
Beyond the loss of lives, these activities are also wreaking havoc on the environment—polluting water bodies, destroying fertile lands, damaging cocoa farms, and wiping out vegetation.

Speaking to Onua TV, the Sefwi Akontombra Police Commander, ASP Samuel Atta, confirmed the unfortunate incidents and assured the public that the police are working hard to tackle the galamsey problem.
He explained that several measures have already been put in place to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the area, and efforts are ongoing to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, some residents speaking to Onua News passionately appealed to the government to swiftly intervene as the illegal miners are destroying the water bodies and lands in the district.
Close sources revealed that the miners have some strong political influences in their activity, which has made the fight against galamsey in the Akontombra District a difficult one.
