The Mfantsipim School community have been put into a state of mourning after a final year student has been confirmed dead by suicide, the police has confirmed.
This comes after the deceased, Emmanuel Arthur’s body was found in an uncompleted building in Ola North, a residential community within the Cape Coast metropolis.
According to reports, a carpenter working close to the uncompleted building found the decomposed body of the 17-year-old final-year student after reporting it to the police.
The Central Regional Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement, indicating that officers were dispatched to the scene on June 11, following information about a body found in the abandoned building.
Following the arrival of the police, they investigated undertook a detailed assessment of the area and recovered several personal effects believed to belong to the deceased. Among the items found were a black backpack containing academic materials, including a Geography Paper One mock examination paper bearing Emmanuel Arthur's name, two mobile phones, an Android device and a basic mobile handset, as well as other personal belongings.
The school authorities were later informed and confirmed that the deceased was a student of their institution. School authorities, in turn, informed his family to assist with identification and investigations.
A pathologist at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital confirmed that the body had been there for some time and had reached an advanced decomposition state.
Consequently, the building was fumigated after the recovery process was completed.
While the immediate cause of death has been established, authorities say inquiries remain ongoing to determine what may have preceded the tragedy.
The death of Emannuel comes barely a few days after the death of 20-year-old Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Avinu, whose lifeless body was washed ashore facedown with nose bleeding at Hutchland Beach Resort in Cape Coast.
This comes days after she was reported missing after telling friends that she was going to meet an acquaintance identified only as Ancelotti outside the university community.
A preliminary examination conducted at the scene revealed no visible signs of assault or other external injuries.The body remains at the mortuary awaiting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The circumstances surrounding the student's death remain unclear, and police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the facts of the incident.
The Education Minister extended his condolences to the bereaved family and friends. Reacting to the sad incident, the Education Minister, in a formal statement, ordered a full investigation into the events surrounding her death.
He said, “The Ministry extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the University community, and urges the public to allow the investigative process to proceed unhindered.
“The Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the authorities of the University of Cape Coast to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to commence a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student's death.”
