The West African Secondary School has progressed to the semi final stage of this year’s National science and maths quiz competition.
WASS failed to reach this stage of the competition last year after they were kicked out by Mawuli School.
WASS qualified with 59 points after a fierce competition from Tamale SHS and Kumasi SHTS, who had 43 and 23 points respectively. WASS becomes the second Unisex in this year’s competition to have qualified to the semi final stage of the competition after Ghana National College.
Though the schools in this contest had no exceptional record in the national science and maths quiz, the contest was expected to be a keen one.
Tamale SHS qualified to the quarter final stage of the competition by winning against Achimota school which is the only Unisex school to have won the national science and maths quiz competition.
West Africa SHS, on the other hand, have been able to carve a niche for themselves following their performance in previous competitions.
However, WASS was able to lead through out the contest, but this was not without a keen competition from Tamale SHS.
The Accra-based school began with a 6 point difference in the first round where they had 25 points with Tamale SHS having 19 points. At round two of the contest, WASS managed to increase points to 10.
In the third and fourth round, Tamale SHS managed to reduce and maintain the points gap at 7 with WASS having 37 and 50 points in the third and fourth round, while Tamale SHS SHE had 30 and 43 points in the third and fourth round respectively.
WASS however managed to solidify their victory in the fifth round by increasing their points to 59 points with Tamale SHS ending the contest with 43 points, while Kumasi SHTS trailed behind with 23 points.
