Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reacted to the alleged assault on his campaign coordinator, Ali Zakaria, during the party’s recent Super Delegates Conference.
Mr Kyerematen strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “total indiscipline and inappropriate behavior” within the party. He expressed surprise at the reported mob assault and lamented the contrast between the party’s values of decency and unity and the misconduct displayed during the leadership selection process.
Kyerematen emphasized that such behavior goes against the principles that led him and others to join the NPP in the first place. He stated that he would not tolerate this kind of behavior, particularly when the party is unable to conduct a peaceful and organized process for selecting leaders among its members. He also called for a thorough investigation into the matter and urged the party’s leadership not to ignore the incident.
The incident involved Ali Zakaria, the coordinator for the Alan Kyerematen campaign team in the Northeast region, who suffered violence during the special delegates conference. He was brutally attacked and left hospitalized. The assault reportedly occurred after Zakaria questioned voters who were publicly displaying their ballot papers to other delegates. He recounted being outnumbered and caught off guard, becoming the target of aggressive individuals.
This incident highlights the internal challenges that political parties sometimes face during their internal processes, and it underscores the importance of maintaining decorum and respect within the party’s ranks. It’s also indicative of the broader issue of ensuring peaceful and orderly political activities in any democratic system.
