Veteran and controversial media personality, Captain Smart, has hinted at his next venture following his departure as the presenter for Onua TV’s Maakye programme.
In a passionate speech during today’s show, Captain Smart formally announced his resignation, expressing optimism for the new path he has chosen.
He took a moment to extend gratitude to his co-workers, the management and staff of Onua TV’s parent company, Media General, and the viewers of the show.
Captain Smart acknowledged the experience and exposure gained during his tenure and expressed pride in his achievements and contributions to the flagship Maakye Show, covering current affairs, social issues, and entertainment.
“Let me thank those who I leave behind. You’ve all done well, from security to drivers. Today, I want to bow respectfully and say bless all of you. But for you, we would not be here. It is because of you that we are where we are today. A lot of people may not understand my speed. You may not actually understand me until you hear my very loud silence. Then you would appreciate that how we wish he was here or he were here.
I leave when the applause is loud. Let me thank you all for your indulgence, for your passion, your compassion, your empathy, everything put together that you wake up every other morning to come listen to me. Once again, let me thank the management of Media General for containing me. My speed is always supersonic. I am a fixer. I fix. I make sure the dead will rise. I always ensure that what is spoiled, the station that is dead and nothing can be done about it, that is where I bring it up. So thank you all Ghanaians. We have done enough. Someone should come and continue,” he noted.
Almost immediately, Captain Smart delved into a speech on African unity and self-reliance, stating, “But the truth of the matter is that there’s a billboard in town the face must show. There is a billboard in town that the face must show. Ghana is my priority, and West Africa is my home. And Africa is my responsibility.”
He continued, “We have to save this country at all costs, and it will be a bash at my back and a bar I cannot hold to survive if I cannot quit to save this country. I cannot always stay in my comfort zone. I cannot. Sitting on air, holding microphones, being mic’d is a comfort zone. I want bigger, bigger, and the biggest task, the great, greater, the greatest task, to prove to the world that once again, the black man is capable of managing his own affairs.”
Captain Smart joined Onua TV in June 2021, after resigning from Angel TV and radio, where he had worked for four years. He also started his own television station, dubbed Smart TV, which has attracted a large following on social media.
Captain Smart is known for his outspoken and fearless style of journalism, which often lands him in trouble with the authorities and some politicians. He has been suspended and arrested several times for his comments and criticisms on various national issues.
He is also known for his philanthropic and humanitarian activities, such as donating to the needy, supporting the education of the underprivileged, and advocating for social justice and good governance.
Captain Smart’s resignation from Onua TV has sparked mixed reactions from his fans and followers, who have expressed their sadness, disappointment, admiration, and curiosity. Some have wished him well in his future endeavours, while others have urged him to reveal his next move.
