Flash floods wreak havoc in Kumasi

Residents in the Ashanti Region capital were wrecked Thursday afternoon by heavy rains as they got ready to wind up activities for the day.

At least one person has been confirmed dead, Joy News’ Erastus Asare Donkor has reported. The body of 13-year-old girl identified as Louisa was swept away by the floods at Asabi close to Asokore Mampong. Her body was recovered at Manhyia on Friday morning. Her family says their two other children cannot be found. A search is underway.

Areas such as Airport Roundabout, Dichemso, Buokrom, Paa-Joe stadium, Amakom were all submerged when rains poured for about five hours.

Reports say hundreds of residents who were leaving work were drenched as they trekked long distances to get home, but most roads were flooded.

Joy News correspondents say the power distributor; the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cut power supply to avoid a further catastrophe.
