Extreme Art? American musician hangs himself from hooks in his back in live performance

American musician Miguel Jontel Pimentel, is not afraid to push the boundaries of his art, and he proved it with a stunning and shocking stunt that left everyone speechless.

The 37-year-old singer literally hung by hooks on his back to perform a song from his upcoming album, Viscera.

The daring act took place at Sony Studios in Los Angeles on Friday, August 25, where Miguel hosted a special four-song concert to preview his new album. Before singing “Rope”, two assistants came out to insert metal rods in piercings through Miguel’s back and wires lifted him up in the air.

The song’s lyrics are fitting for the stunt, as they say, “I’m hanging on to nothing / I’m hanging from the ceiling / Rope around my neck.”

The performance, which was also live-streamed, was billed as a “boundary-pushing performance” for the musician, who since 2017, hasn’t released a full-length album.

According tp reports by TMZ, Miguel spent several months preparing for this daring stunt.

Miguel, earlier this month in an interview with The Los Angeles Times opened up about planning the experience, saying “Initially it was a bit of, ‘What is the most extreme way to push outside of what’s expected?’” Miguel told the outlet. “How far can I go in demonstrating how far I’m willing to go for art, for conversation? I couldn’t have known how committed I was to the real purpose of this shit until I had hooks in my back.”

He said that hanging by hooks on his back made him confront his fear and control issues.”It was a scary and freeing experience and emotion to go through because it’s such a light switch,” he said. “It has so much to do with pain. What does pain mean?”

Miguel confessed that he wrote “Rope” when he was going through a dark phase before marrying Nazanin Mandi in 2018. The now exes called it quits in September 2021 after getting hitched in Nov. 2018. They had a long history together, dating for almost 14 years since they were both 18. They got engaged in 2016.

“I don’t think I’d ever been in a place where I was creating from there,” Miguel said. “You build a reputation and a repertoire around love and sex and sexiness — these completely unrelated tones. Getting to the point where I allowed myself to express these emotions was a bit of a journey.”
