CHAN2022: Mauritania secures historic qualification to quarter-finals of tournament
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mauritania made history on Tuesday, January 24, when the national team beat Mali by a goal to nil in the 2022 CAF Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament.

The win is the first ever recorded by Mauritania at the CHAN tournament since CAF started organising the competition.

In addition, the win has propelled Mauritania to the quarter-finals of the CHAN tournament. Historically, this is the first time “Al-Murabitun” has qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament.

Today, Mauritania needed to win to cement a place in the next round of the CHAN 2022 tournament being staged in Algeria.

In the first half of end-to-end action, both Mali and Mauritania had their chances but neither side could get on the scoresheet.

After recess, Mauritania labored and fortunately had their reward in the 53rd minute.

A fantastic header from Mamadou Sy handed the “Al-Murabitun” the lead and led the side to a 1-0 win at the end of the contest.
