The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Clifford Briamah, has described as baseless calls for the removal of the Board Chairman of the Company, Alexander Afenyo Markin, by some workers of the company.
Some members of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of GWCL in the Ashanti Region, last week called for the immediate dismissal of Mr. Afenyo Markin without assigning any reasons.
But speaking to Citi News, Mr. Briamah defended the company’s board chair.
He suggested that the workers were accusing Mr. Afenyo Markin of interfering with the union by removing the worker’s rep from the company’s board.
“They were talking about the Board Chairman removing the workers’ rep of the board, which is not the case. There was an anomaly and the board itself said let’s correct it. They didn’t understand and they thought it was the Board Chairman,†Mr. Briamah explained.
Mr. Briamah also refuted the suggestions of financial malfeasance on the part of Mr. Afenyo Markin.
“They said the board chairman is signing cheques. I, as the MD, I know the Board Chairman hasn’t signed any cheques at all,†he said.

The protesting workers in Kumasi were also demanding the removal of the 3rd Deputy Managing Director of the Company.
They had tied banners at entrances of the company in Kumasi, calling for the dismissal of the two officers.
Citi News’ Ashanti Regional correspondent, Hafiz Tijani, who visited some GWCL offices in the region observed that red bands were tied at the main entrance of the Ashanti Regional North office of the company.
It was unclear at the time why the members were embarking on such a protest.
They declined to comment on the matter saying their national executives were mandated to speak on it, but the executives also refused to speak .
