Ayensu Starch Factory shuts down again

August 8, 2018

Ghana’s only starch producing company, Ayensu Starch Factory, has shut down completely since April this year, a source at the company told JoyBusiness.

The shutdown according to the source has persisted due to a broken down equipment which is used for the production of the starch.

It is not clear when production will commence again as the particular equipment will have to be made to suit the needs of the company. It is likely the equipment might be imported and installed before the end of the year.

Workers have been asked to go home awaiting the possible resuscitation of the company.

Cassava farmers who produced cassava for the factory this year will have to find other means of selling their produce.

It will be recalled that JoyBusiness reported tonnes of cassava left to rot at the factory and the fact that Ayensu starch factory owed in arrears.

Established in 2002, the Ayensu Starch Factory has hardly worked efficiently since it was set up. The company has shut down several times in the past for many reasons including raw material and fuel.

Why Ayensu starch factory must not collapse

Farmers are a major benefactor of the factory, providing a ready market for their produce.

The company supplies starch to Guinness Ghana in the production of its Ruut Beer which is locally manufactured.

The crop research institute, pastry companies among others depend on their existence.
