Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service. Dr Nuhu Zakaria has been dismissed by President John Mahama.
No official statement or briefing has been made on Mr Zakaria's termination yet.
However, according to reports, his alleged sacking stems from his purported misuse of the unearned academic title, 'Professor'.
In June 21, this year, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in a statement ordered the embattled CEO to desist from using the title 'Professor', claiming he had not been conferred with the title by any accredited institution locally nor internationally.
According to the statement, “You are therefore directed to desist from using the title ‘Professor’ with immediate effect, as it has not been conferred on you by a legally mandated body,” the GTEC letter stated.
GTEC noted that institutions that have a presidential charter are legally mandated to confer such titles, and any self-designation without proper conferment is tantamount to academic dishonesty and misrepresentation.
His termination has sparked reactions about accountability and professional standards in public office.
Dr. Nuhu Zakaria was appointed CEO of the National Ambulance Service under the Akufo-Addo administration in 2017 and has served for the past seven to almost 8 years.
Dr Nuhuchaled several successes during his tenure as CEO.The National Ambulance Service (NAS) saw significant growth and transformation, making emergency healthcare more accessible across Ghana.
Under his leadership, ambulance stations increased from just 7 to nearly 300, ensuring significant nationwide expansion.
He also grew staff strength from under 70 to over 3,400 personnel, including trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
He ensured the establishment of the only Paramedic Training School in West Africa, boosting local capacity for emergency medical care.
