Boxing enthusiast and manager of Med Sports TV, Mr Med has commended the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legacy Rise, Sharaf Mahama, for his efforts to revive boxing in Ghana, describing his initiative as one with a strong social impact.
“One thing people don’t know is that boxing is meant to take people off the streets, and by giving them these opportunities, he is going to take a lot of people off the streets. We have had Ghanaian boxers who were once armed robbers, and boxing saved their lives,” he said.
His comment comes on the back of Legacy Rise and Match Room’s historic boxing night held in Accra at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon on Saturday December 20, 2025.
The fight of the night was a grudge match between two former sparring partners from South London, Daan Azee and Craig Richards.
Craig Richards ultimately claimed the vacant IBF International light heavyweight title with a 12th-round knockout over Dan Azeez.
The fight was closely contested in the early rounds, with former sparring partners Richards (20-4-1, 13 KOs) and Azeez (22-3-1, 14 KOs) trading blows, but Richards pulled ahead to secure the victory.
Light heavyweight Jonathan Tetteh, better known as ‘Worldwide,’ defeated Freezy Macbones (11-0, 10 KOs) by a points decision, extending his record to 11 wins, including 10 knockouts.
The two fighters had previously competed for a single Olympic berth in the Black Bombers, Ghana’s national boxing team, adding extra intrigue to the matchup. Early this year, McBones famously refused to face Tetteh when prompted by then-GBA president Abraham Kotei Neequaye.
The tension in the ring was evident, intensifying when McBones appeared to bite Tetteh during the fourth round.
Despite regaining his composure, McBones was unable to prevent Tetteh from claiming victory.
The standout bout of the night came from the talented John Laryea and Holy Dorgbetor.
Laryea combined strength with exceptional technical skill to defeat Dorgbetor in the seventh round, capturing the IBF Continental Africa featherweight title.
The win improves Laryea’s record to 14 victories and one draw.
Saturday’s result made Laryea a two-time featherweight champion.
The organization was officially launched with a high‑energy event that featured promising young boxers and brought together prominent sports figures, signalling a new era in sports promotion and management in the country.
The company mentors young athletes, offering training coordination, career guidance, and support to help them reach higher levels in their sport.
It helps athletes secure high‑profile opportunities, endorsements, and broader exposure through media and marketing efforts.
Legacy Rise Sports creates pathways for athletes to compete internationally. For example, it supported a Ghanaian boxer to represent the country at a UK tournament.
The company’s leadership, including CEO Sharaf Mahama, emphasizes using sports as a tool for youth empowerment and social change, aiming to uplift communities through athletics.
Matchroom Boxing on the other hand is one of the world’s leading professional boxing promotion companies. It was founded in 1987 by Barry Hearn and has since become a dominant force in global boxing, responsible for promoting some of the sport’s most memorable fights and biggest stars across several decades.
Under the leadership of Eddie Hearn, Matchroom has built an elite roster of world‑class fighters, including champions and Olympians such as Anthony Joshua, Katie Taylor, and many others. The company regularly promotes major fight nights — around 20 or more events per year — which are broadcast live on platforms like Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN worldwide.
Matchroom is known not only for staging high‑profile bouts but also for transforming boxing into a mainstream spectator sport, creating record‑breaking events such as the sold‑out bouts at Wembley Stadium and other iconic venues.
In 2018, Matchroom Boxing signed a historic $1 billion deal with the streaming service DAZN, expanding its global reach and committing to stage numerous high‑level fights each year across the United States and Europe.
In late 2025, Matchroom continued its global expansion by staging its first ever event in Africa, in Accra, Ghana, in partnership with local promoters such as Legacy Rise Sports and 258BXG, and broadcast live on DAZN, marking a major milestone in the company’s international growth.
