Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has spoken about growing speculation linking him with a future bid for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Speaking during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi, in Accra on Sunday, August 24.

Although he acknowledged what the “masses want”, he indicated that what is important is his commitment to see Ghana football thrive in the present and not just in the future; however, he stopped short of confirming that he intends to contest the position.

“First of all, what the masses want is most important. I've heard the rumours about people saying I should lead Ghana football, but that's not what is important; I just want our football to grow,” he said.

“Not tomorrow, but now,” Ayew added.

The next Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential and executive council elections are scheduled to take place in 2027.

Kurt Okraku has been the head of the country's football governing body since 2019.

Andre Dede Ayew last played for the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under head coach Otto Addo. He was not recalled afterwards and was officially left out of Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Carlos Queiroz.

Ayew is Ghana’s most-capped player, with over 120 appearances across four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2022, and provisionally omitted in 2026).

His omission in 2026 was controversial, as he had returned to club football with NAC Breda in the Netherlands, playing regularly and scoring once in 16 appearances.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams even publicly backed his recall, but Queiroz opted for a younger squad.

Ayew is currently without a club after leaving Dutch side NAC Breda in May.

He has remained in Ghana and continued to train ahead of a possible move abroad, with ongoing negotiations with “three clubs”.

He has captained Ghana and represented the Black Stars at several major international tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
