Sweden has announced former Chelsea and West Ham United manager Graham Potter as the head coach of Sweden’s National Men’s Football Team.
In a statement shared on their official website today, Monday, October 20, management announced that, following their poor run in their last four matches, from which they earned just a point, they had to part ways with their coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, last Tuesday. Chelsea and West Ham’s former coach Graham Potter will step in to take over, effective October 20.
“After only one point after the first four matches in the World Cup qualifiers this fall, the Swedish Football Association's board chose to terminate the appointment of national captain Jon Dahl Tomasson last Tuesday. The men's national team will be led by Graham Potter from Monday, October 20.
"The agreement extends over the ongoing qualifying period with matches against Switzerland and Slovenia in November and a potential playoff in March, and will be automatically extended through the World Cup playoffs next summer if Sweden qualifies there”, the management said.

Graham Potter, in an acceptance speech, praised the team’s players for their stunning form, promising a conducive environment for them to deliver in their best capacity.
“I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the week. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer”, Graham Potter, the 50-year-old Brit, expressed.
Kim Källström, Football Director at SvFF, expressed confidence in Graham’s leadership and tactical philosophy to bring the team to a good form and qualify as they gear up for the World Cup qualifiers.
“ It feels very good that Graham is coming in as the national team captain for the men's national team. We are all aware of the situation we are in, and believe that with his leadership skills, he will bring the team together in a good way. He is tactically skilled at creating conditions to win matches and has the ability to identify players' strengths and how they interact in the best way.The new national team captain takes office today and will immediately begin work on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers”, he noted.
Graham Potter, 50 years old from England, has solid experience of British football and a good knowledge of Swedish football after seven successful years (2011-2018) at Östersunds FK.
After his Swedish stay, during which Graham Potter led Östersund FK to European Cup matches, he has had several coaching assignments in England at clubs such as Swansea City (Championship), Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, and West Ham in the Premier League.
In 2019–2022, Graham coached Brighton & Hove Albion and helped stabilize the club in the Premier League, gaining admiration for tactical flexibility and player development.
Chelsea FC appointed him in September 2022, but his tenure ended in April 2023 after a difficult run of form. Since then, he has been out of the coaching train until he showed up in Sweden as their current coach.
In an unrelated development, Chelsea won the 2025 Club World Cup, which saw Donald Trump in attendance.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, July 8, announced his decision to attend the Club World Cup final, which was being hosted in the USA at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Just as promised, he showed up, but not only to present the trophy; he also joined the Blues to celebrate their win yesterday, Sunday, July 13.
The gesture appeared to have come as a surprise to the Blues' skipper and man of the night, Cole Palmer.
Reece, during an interview, mentioned that he was aware that Trump was going to give the trophy to them and step aside, but after the presentation, he stayed.
Following the presentation, FIFA President Gianni Infantino invited Trump to move aside, possibly so he could also take part in the ceremony or have a photo taken, but Reece said,
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
Trump stayed for some time before later exiting with Infantino.
Following the Blues’ 3-0 win over Paris St-Germain in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James.
However, Trump remained alongside James and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and applauded as James lifted the trophy, staying in position for a few seconds before he and Infantino left at the rear of the stage.
Cole Palmer, who notched a brace, also mentioned his surprise after Trump decided to celebrate their win. He added, “I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy.
“I was a bit confused, yes.”
The final of the expanded Club World Cup was attended by 81,118 people at MetLife Stadium.
In a later interview with DAZN at halftime, Trump mentioned that he was “having a really great time.”
In a longer interview broadcast later on Sunday, he commended FIFA president for his contributions and supervision of the growth of the sport.
“Gianni is a friend of mine, he’s done such a great job with the league and with soccer – or as they would call it ‘football’, but I guess we call it soccer. But I’m not sure that change could be made very easily.
“But it’s great to watch – and this is a little bit of an upset that we’re watching today, isn’t it? So far. It’s incredible.”
When it was suggested he could make an executive order so that the sport was referred to as “football” from now on, Trump smiled and said, “I think we could do that. I think I could do that.”
The United States, Canada, and Mexico will co-host the 2026 men’s World Cup next summer.
This year’s Club World Cup is the first to feature 32 teams and 48 games.
The expansion featured four African countries: Al-Ahly of Egypt, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Tunisia's Esperance Sportive de Tunis, and Morocco's Wydad Casablanca.
