Real Valladolid’s struggles continued on Sunday as they suffered a heavy 4-0 home loss to Getafe—and things got even worse on the bench.
During the match, with Valladolid already down 3-0 in the 66th minute, tension boiled over between defender Luis Pérez and striker Juan Miguel Latasa, who had been substituted earlier. Cameras caught the heated argument between the two players.
At one point, Pérez tried to hit Latasa on the arm, but teammate Eray Cömert, who was sitting between them, stepped in to stop him. A coach quickly intervened and had a word with Pérez, who then left the bench and headed to the dressing room.
After the match, the club released a statement saying both players will face disciplinary action for their behavior.
"Real Valladolid wishes to express its strong condemnation of the incident that occurred today on the bench between players Luis Pérez and Juan Miguel Latasa during the match against Getafe CF," they said.
"We deeply regret the image given by our players. The frustration that the sporting situation is leading us all to must be transformed into greater commitment, a better attitude, and improved performance, never into division and confrontation.
"Therefore, in defense of the club's image and respect for our teammates and, especially, our fans, Real Valladolid will proceed to apply the General Disciplinary Regulations to both players."
Valladolid, a club owned by Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazario, has had a difficult season, winning only four out of 30 league matches.
Their last win came on January 11, and since then, things have gone downhill. Sunday's heavy loss marked their 10th defeat in the last 11 games.
With just eight matches left to play, they now sit 14 points away from safety, making their chances of avoiding relegation extremely slim.
